Our History

The Saskatoon Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center is a multi-faceted facility located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The center was established in 2004 as a multidisciplinary orthopedic and sports medicine facility, the first in Saskatchewan, providing leadership and excellence through innovation in the areas of sports medicine assessment, treatment, education, research and development. Saskatoon Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center is designed to serve the needs of both competitive athletes and recreationally active individuals alike, and is staffed by physicians and orthopedic surgeons specializing in the diagnosis and management of orthopedic and sport related injury.

Orthopedic surgeons provide clinical assessment and management services, as well as surgical intervention options. SOSMC is fortunate to have several outstanding orthopedic surgeons on the SOSMC team. Their special interest and specific training provides them with the experience and tools to evaluate and direct the management of a client’s specific injury or problem. Once a clinical assessment has been completed, the surgeon may establish a management plan including: sport/activity modification; medication; request for further medical/radiological investigations or testing; initiation of referral for physiotherapy rehabilitation; or specific surgical intervention. The group of surgeons at SOSMC have extensive training and experience in a variety of procedures including: total shoulder replacement, total hip replacement, total knee replacement, joint reconstructive procedures (shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle), and spine surgery. The orthopedic surgeons are dedicated to continuing education and technical training in order to provide the most up to date surgical techniques and procedures. Access to orthopedic consultation is via physician referral.

The center strives to take a proactive approach, accessing the appropriate medical, diagnostic, and rehabilitation resources as effectively and efficiently as possible in order to provide optimal service to each client. Patient care encompasses acute and chronic musculoskeletal injury, as well as pre and post surgical management leading to a graduated progressive return to function and sport. A primary objective of the clinic is to allow each client to achieve their own individual health, fitness and performance goals. Assessment and management of a client’s injury is approached from a global perspective, identifying not only the problem, but the source of the problem, enabling management to address both primary treatment and secondary prevention.

In addition to the center’s extensive commitment to clinical practice, education and research play an integral role in the mandate of the facility. Ongoing research and development associated with the center will provide a foundation for evidence based clinical application, providing a rich experience and environment for the clinic staff, as well as those students and medical residents participating in placements within the facility. The aim of the Saskatoon Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center is to remain on the leading edge of innovation and development in the area of orthopedic and sports medicine injury assessment and treatment.
